KAMPALA - Ronald Baryejussa can now afford to smile as hope for undergoing surgery for an inguinal hernia (hernia of the testicles) at Mulago National Referral Hospital has been restored after 10 years of suffering.

The change in fortunes comes after Prime Minister Robinah Nabbanja delivered the 40-year-old Baryejussa to Mulago Hospital on Friday, November 25, 2022, night.

The latter was received by Mulago Hospital acting executive director Dr Rosemary Byanyima.

According to Mayo Clinic, an inguinal hernia occurs when tissue, such as part of the intestine, protrudes through a weak spot in the abdominal muscles.

The resulting bulge can be painful, especially when you cough, bend over or lift a heavy object.

Byanyima says the lump often appears when one lifts something and disappears when he lies down.

“The surgeons are preparing the patient, for the surgery to be carried out soon. We hope that the healing process will not take long,” she added.

Asked about statistics of patients of such cases, Byanyima said being a national referral hospital, many cases are referred for surgery, but could not remember the figures.

How Nabbanja got to know

“I got touched after watching a video that went viral on my cell phone. Baryejussa had become a social misfit, crying for medical help, after suffering from the sickness. I contacted him to immediately come to my office and forwarded him for surgery to Mulago Hospital,” Nabbanja said.

She added that the Government provides free surgery at Mulago hospital.

“I will meet the medical sundries, medicines and upkeep for Baryejussa, which the hospital may not avail. I call up on other men with Hernia of the testicles to come out of hiding and undergo surgery,” she said.

In the video Baryejussa, who hails from the Village of Katete, Nakisunga sub-county Mukono district begs: “Maama Nabbanja rescue me! I have suffered with a hernia of the testicles for 10 years. I sought surgery, but they demand sh 50m, which I can't afford”.

“I had no dreams of fathering a biological child, but I pray to God that if the surgery is successful, I will marry and produce children,” he said.

Clarifying on the symptoms, Byanyima pointed out that Hydrocele appears as swelling in the scrotum. A hydrocele may appear larger at the end of the day or with increased activity. Hernias the other hand, appear as a bulge in the groin.

A hydrocele that persists beyond 12 months of age usually requires surgical correction. A hernia at any age should be corrected.

Difference between hydrocele and hernia

A hydrocele occurs when fluid collects in the scrotum and causes it to swell. This may or may not be accompanied by a hernia. A hernia is present when the bowel or membranes, known as omentum, push through the abdominal wall either into or above the scrotum.

“Men with such conditions should not shy away to come for medical treatment at Mulago Hospital. Upcountry patients can also seek surgery from other regional hospitals,” Byanyima said.
