KAMPALA - The former coordinator of intelligence services, Gen David Sejusa, has said the things the late Gen Elly Tumwine did for Uganda will stay with them forever.

Tumwine, a four-star general and former security minister and army MP died of lung cancer on August 25 at the age of 68.

Sejusa, who is also a four-star general, made the remarks on Monday (August 29) while reminiscing 49 years of friendship with Tumwine.

"People like General Tumwine never die; how can they? Because the things they have done stay with us forever! Sleep well, brother!" he said on his Twitter handle.

Sejusa promised that he would get time and talk about his brother, Gen. Tumwine.

"I variously talked or wrote about him, but most importantly, there is a whole chapter written about him," he said.

He recalled that he first met the late Tumwine together with former minister and MP John Nasasira in 1973.

"I was in Agakhan School and they were at St. Henry's College Kitovu. We have been together since," he said.

Sejusa noted that when he came from exile in December 2014 after demanding an investigation into an alleged assassination plot linked to the President's alleged succession plan, Tumwine came to his home and they hugged each other and cried.

Tumwine then rang Sejusa in early May 2022 about their impending retirement from the army.

Sejusa had for long sought to be discharged from the army so that he freely does what civilians do.

On the list of army officers lined up for retirement, Tumwine was listed number one and Sejusa number two.

"He (Tumwine) sounded full of life and he told me about his vision/plans during retirement," Sejusa said.

Quoting Isaiah 55:8-9, he added, "My plans aren't your plans nor are your plans my ways, says the Lord."

Sejusa and Tumwine are among the 34 generals the army listed for retirement this month.

They are part of the over 1,196 personnel that the Uganda People's Defence Forces plans to retire under batch 12.

"Gen Elly is gone home! You danced with death all your adult life because it's the way of the soldier! And you acted the way you did because 'when one knows death so well, one has more responsibility for life'.

To Jolly and chidren, may the lord comfort you! To National Resistance Army/UPDF, a hero has gone home!" Sejusa tweeted shortly after the news that Tumwine had breathed his last at Aga Khan Hospital in Nairobi, Kenya.
