Kyagulanyi’s convoy in fatal accident, two killed

The National Unity Platform (NUP) on Saturday, May 21, 2022, evening confirmed two of its members died after one of the vehicles in the convoy of their Presidential candidate Robert Kyagulanyi was involved in an accident. 

The team was heading to Omoro County, in Omoro District to campaign for their Parliamentary candidate in the Omoro by-elections.

“NUP has learnt with great sadness and shock, of an accident that occurred on the road towards Kumi, involving some of our comrades. The car was travelling to Omoro to join our campaign team. We have so far learnt that two of our comrades and leaders, Denis Waiswa from Iganga and Yakub Kiggundu from Kawempe, have passed on,” NUP said. 

The party noted that it would give more updates and urged its supporters to “keep praying for the rest of the comrades to recover from the injuries sustained.” 

The New Vision has learnt that one of the cars which was in the convoy lost control and overturned killing two and injuring several others.

Among those injured was a Buganda Broadcasting Services (BBS) cameraman. 

According to BBS journalist Culton Scovia Nakamya, “our Cameraman Amon Kitamirike is among the people involved in a serious accident on their way to Omoro.  He’s responding to medication at Atutur Referral Hospital.,” she said. 

The Omoro County seat fell vacant following the death of former Speaker of Parliament Jacob Oulanyah on March 20, in Seattle in the US following a battle with cancer. 

On Friday, May 13, 2022, Electoral Commission (EC) concluded nominations of candidates who had expressed interest to contest as Members of Parliament for Omoro County. 

According to the programme released by EC, the six who include Simon Tolit (National Unity Platform); Odong Justine (Forum for Democratic Change); Kizza Oscar (Alliance for National Transformation; Onen Jimmy Walter (Independent); Odonga Terence (Independent) and Andrew Ojok Oulanyah (National Resistance Movement) have 10 days to campaign and rally support across Omoro from Monday, May 16 - Tuesday, May 24, 2022. 

The by-elections will then be held on May 26, 2022.
