Stanbic Bank donates sh150m to Makerere centenary celebrations

KAMPALA - Stanbic Bank Uganda Limited, which is one of the largest commercial banks in Uganda, has donated sh150m towards Makerere’s centenary celebrations. 

In a statement, the Vice-Chancellor of Makerere University, Prof. Barnabas Nawangwe, thanked Anne Juuko, the Chief Executive Officer, Stanbic bank and the entire bank leadership for the “generous donation of sh150m towards Makerere as it marks 100 years. May our partnership grow stronger,” Nawangwe said through his Twitter handle. 

Awel Uwihanganye, the Chief Executive Officer of Mak@100 Secretariat said the timely contribution will be instrumental in boosting activities lined up on the university calendar in commemoration of a hundred years of Makerere’s existence. 

The activities include Public Lectures, a Centenary Conference, and Centenary Run, among many others that can be accessed through the events section on this website. 

Commenting on the donation, Juuko, said that as a proud alumnus of Makerere, she will continue being the institution’s great ambassador and that today’s sh150m contribution towards the centenary celebrations was not all. 

“We have contributed sh150m to Mak@100 celebrations, and that is not all, we will continue supporting the university in kind,” Juuko said. 

Juuko further pledged a strong partnership between Stanbic Bank and Makerere University, she retaliated this year’s collaboration agreement between both institutions to provide students with laptops to ease E-Learning, as Makerere embraces online teaching in the post- Covid-19 world. 

“In partnership with Makerere, Stanbic Bank through the ‘Ffuna Ka Laptop Program,’ students can now get laptops at a minimum fee of sh70,000 shillings per month.” she said, adding, “We are committed to the evolution of education as Makerere celebrates a hundred years. 

 Stanbic Bank joins several other stakeholders who have contributed money towards Makerere Centenary celebrations and these include MTN Uganda and Absa Bank.
