The Crested Cranes have been drawn in Group A of the CECAFA Women's Championships with neighbours Rwanda, Burundi and Djibouti.

The draws were held on Wednesday via Zoom with different federation heads in which eight teams confirmed participation.

Uganda are the host and the championships are scheduled to get underway from May 22 to June 5 at the FUFA Technical Centre in Njeru.

Uganda is hosting the championship for the first time since 2016 and head coach George Lutalo is the man entrusted with the big responsibility of assembling the team to ensure the trophy stays on home soil.

The Crested Cranes have appeared in all editions but haven’t managed to win it. The closest they have come was finishing as runners-up in the 2018 edition behind Tanzania on goal difference when Rwanda hosted.

In the previous edition that was held in Tanzania in 2019, Uganda finished third with Kenya Starlets emerging winners after beating the Kilimanjaro Queens of Tanzania 2-0 in the final.

Kenya will not have the chance to defend its title after failing to confirm participation and hence missing out on Wednesday’s draws.

Tanzania, Zanzibar, South Sudan and Ethiopia are drawn in Group B.

Uganda and Burundi are the two sides set to represent the CECAFA region in the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations that are slated for June in the Moroccan city of Rabat.

They will make proper use of this regional championship to prepare adequately for the Africa Cup of Nations.

Over the weekend, Lutalo began residential training for the players making up the 47-man provisional squad that was summoned last week.
