The event is the first of its kind and is expected to set a new trend in University sports. On Saturday, teams took part in rugby, athletics, volleyball, football, netball, scrabble chess played at the school campus while tennis was played in Mbale.
Some events such as basketball ended rather quickly because there were only two teams in the competition. The host Busitema took on Kenya’s United States International University and they lost both ties. They lost the opening match 65-12with Rama Benedict scoring 16 points. The second match was worse as UISU scored 53-4 showing the gulf in class.
UISU took home the two-team competition but the idea of the competition is what resonated with MVP Yvonne Peace.
“It was a good competition and we expected more universities to attend but we only had one university. Regardless I’m happy with the competition, they gave us female referees and they were fair. Back at home (Kenya) we can have a women’s tournament and we normally see males because the women are normally not quite as many as the men and Busitema offered us female referees,” said Peace.
Busitema is looking to become a giant in the East and this event is one of the ways they are going to create a sports program that will change the climate in the Eastern Region.
“We have plans to build a multipurpose sports program that will hopefully make them a point of reference in the Eastern Region. Yesterday we started this event with a round table and a round table resolution that United States University in Kenya will host the games in February 2022. There will be a student's forum in October as well. . University is determined to continue collaborating with coaches and sports professionals in the country as we seek to grow sport,” said Busitema vice-chancellor Paul Waako.
John Mulimba, Minister of State for Foreign affairs in charge of regional cooperation who represented the Minister of Sports Janet Museveni as the guest of honour read the first lady’s message in which she promised to ensure the sports budget and policy are improved upon as soon as possible.
