MITYANA - Police in Mityana have closed six Police posts in different sub-counties, causing concern among the residents.

This comes a few weeks after the Police in Mityana and Kiboga districts were attacked, officers killed and guns robbed.

The Police spokesperson for Wamala region, Racheal Kawala, said they are doing this to ensure better safety of their officers and better services to the residents.

Kawala said the Police posts that were closed did not have enough manpower, which exposed the Police officers there to lots of risks.

“These have been temporarily closed due to the limited manpower which puts the lives of the officers at risk,” Kawala said.

She said that some officers have been deployed at nearby Police posts and Police stations and this will ensure better services to the residents.

Among the Police posts that have been closed are Namutamba, Kiryokya and Kibuto in Bulera sub-county; Ttanda in Ttamu division and Nakaseeta in Busimbi division in Mityana municipality and Kikandwa in Kikandwa sub-county.

The closure of the Police posts comes at a time when residents in Namutamba parish in Bulera sub-county, Mityana district have been constructing a multi-million shilling building to house their Police post, which has also been closed.

A few years back, presidential advisor John Nagenda, who hails from Namutamba, offered a piece of land to the community and Uganda Police Force on which to build a Police post.

The Police post has been housed in buildings owned by Nagenda as the construction progressed.

Before the building was completed residents were surprised to hear that the Police post at Namutamba had been closed and the Police officers taken away.

“We were so surprised and shocked to hear that the Police who we have been struggling to house in a good building has been taken away without our consent. The people who have been raising the money have been so disappointed,” John Kataza, the chairperson of the committee tasked with building the Police post, said.

Kataza noted with concern that the closure of the Police post could result in an increase in crime in the community.

At Namutamba there are a number of institutions that include over nine schools including teachers colleges, a church, tea factories and health centres, some of which are run by Europeans and Americans.
