UN to assess Uganda’s human rights record

Reports by the Uganda Human Rights Commission have indicted security agencies for being the leading violators of the rights of Ugandans.

Uganda’s human rights record will be examined by a meeting at the United Nations headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland on Thursday (January 27).

According to a media advisory released by the United Nations Human Rights Council, this will be done by the UN Human Rights Council’s Universal Periodic Review Working Group.

The meeting will be webcast live from 11am to 2:30pm (Ugandan time).

 The documents on which the reviews are based include;

The national report containing information provided by the State under review

Information contained in the reports of independent human rights experts and groups, human rights treaty bodies

Information provided by civil society groups, and

Information from regional organizations.

During the launch of the Uganda Law Society quarterly rule of law report on Tuesday, the acting Minister for Justice and Constitutional Affairs, Wilson Muruli Mukasa, said: “It is not a government policy to violate the rights of Ugandans. These are personal mistakes of errant officers.”
