KAMPALA - In an operation mounted by Uganda National Bureau of Standards (UNBS) and the National Environment Management Authority (NEMA), seven plastic manufacturing factories have been closed.

UNBS led the operation to crackdown on plastic bags under 30 microns and below in parts of Kampala and Wakiso.

The operation was conducted in December.

We inspected 38 facilities and seven were making plastics that were non-compliant,” said Tony Achidria, the Senior Public Relations Officer, National Environment Management Authority (NEMA).

“They were making some products that were below 30 microns and some were not labeled.”

He added, “The seven were closed. What was closed were the specific manufacturing units of the seven factories. The parts of the factories that make harder plastics remained operational.”

He also said that the management of the seven factories were asked to interact with UNBS.

He also said that the anti-plastic making operations of 30 microns that is outlawed will continue.

“The exercise will be expanded countrywide and will continue abruptly,” he said.

He added, “as an institution, we continue advocating for a total ban but we continue going with what is in the law. We also advocate for a circular economy so that plastics are not a menace.”
