NAKASONGOLA - Police on Saturday confirmed 5 people had died in an accident at Kyampisi in Nakasongola district along the Kampala-Gulu highway.

Faridah Nampiima the Traffic and Safety Directorate Spokesperson said four other people were injured in the accident.

“The territorial police in Nakasongola yesterday (Friday January 14th, 2022), registered a fatal accident which claimed the lives of five people and seriously injured four others,” Nampiima said.

Nampiima said the two vehicles involved, a Benz trailer registration number SSD 078U/SSD773A and Toyota Hiace registration number UBE 902T, were all travelling from Kampala towards Gulu.

“The Hiace knocked the trailer from behind, killing five on the spot. All the deceased have not yet been identified and their bodies were conveyed to Nakasongola Hospital Mortuary for post-mortem examination,” Nampiima said.

The Nakasongola incident brings the death toll of accident victims to 9 on Friday after a family of four were knocked dead by a truck at Najjembe in Buikwe district.

The Traffic and Safety Directorate urged all drivers and road users to be vigilant on roads.

“Avoid speeding, reckless driving and other accident contributing factors, we are to enhance our Fiika salama operations and spot checks along all highways,” Nampiima said.

Fiika Salama was a code name for an operation jointly launched by the Uganda Police Force and Uganda National Roads Authority on the Masaka-Mbarara Highway to check against overspeeding following several accidents on the roads.

It involved erecting several checkpoints along the way and also highway patrols to check on reckless driving.

It drastically reduced the number of accidents recorded on that highway.
