KAMPALA - On November 24, 2021, Dr. Mary Otieno officially began her duty as the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) Country Representative in Uganda. 

Dr. Otieno joined the Uganda office from Juba, South Sudan where she has just completed her tour of duty. 

The new UNFPA Country Representative presented her credentials to State Minister for Foreign Affairs Henry Okello Oryem. 

The minister noted that UNFPA has provided continuous support to government to implement programmes in the areas of Population and Development, integrated sexual and reproductive health and gender equality. 

He said the support, is well aligned to government priorities as enshrined in the National Vision 2020 and articulated in the National Development Plan III (2021-2025). 

Dr. Otieno who is a Kenyan national served for three and a half years in neighbouring South Sudan. 

She brings with her more than 20 years of managerial and strategic leadership, advocacy, coordination and technical expertise in reproductive health. 

Her reproductive health expertise covers HIV, gender-based violence, population and development. 

She also brings expertise in gender and human rights at national and international levels, within the UN System, and with international organizations. 

Dr. Otieno assured government of UNFPA’s continued commitment to support the country to achieve its development aspirations, by turning the youthful population into productive human and social capital that will contribute to sustainable economic growth. 

Dr. Otieno replaces Alain Sibenaler whose tour of duty ended in Uganda.
