Homes define what people are and also promote economic growth. For some people, shelter is one of the basic necessities of life that will protect people from vagaries of nature such as floods, gusty winds and heavy rains.

But for Jessica Alupo, the Vice President of Uganda, decent homes mean good relations and also provide a foundation that spurs productivity and economic growth. Despite their importance, Uganda has a shortage of 2.4 million units. She said even a traditional house can be a decent home with proper sanitation.

Alupo was speaking as the chief guest on Friday (November 26, 2021) during the closing ceremony of Vision Group’s Homes and Construction virtual expo at Danube Home, Kampala. The theme of the five-day expo was “New technologies and sustainable solutions in the homes construction sector.”

She was flanked by the Managing Director/CEO Vision Group Don Wanyama on Urban TV live, Bukedde 1 and Bukedde2, TV West, TV East, Wan Luo, which are all under Vision Group. The ceremony was also covered on the New Vision Digital Experience App.

“Uganda needs an effective and efficient infrastructure to support economic growth, poverty eradication, social development and competition in the global market. As you very well know, no economy of a country can stand without proper infrastructure,” Alupo said.

She explained that the theme of the expo underscores the role of infrastructure in the national economy and its multiplier effects on improving social and economic development. According to Alupo, for the last 35 years, Ugandans in general and our government in particular have made big strides in infrastructure development.

“Due to a conducive environment and investor confidence, local and foreign investors have turned our urban skylines into skyscrapers. Several rural habitats are also dotted with corrugated iron sheet houses. Numerous road arteries have also opened up to spurn all corners of this country,” she said.

Alupo noted that there is still a lot more to do in the construction and housing sector. “Uganda’s housing sector must match our population growth which, at over 3% per annum is one of the highest in the world. Increased urbanisation causes, among other things, increased energy consumption, need for more construction materials and infrastructure development,” she said. “In addition let me remind you that the construction industry is one of the most important segments of the country’s GDP, which needs everyone’s support and appreciation.”

Prior to Alupo’s remarks, Wanyama said about 12 million Ugandans have no place to call home. Wanyama said the expo provided space for experts to share information on how to acquire land, avoid fraudulent transactions, titling and how to build a house. The last day provided information about home financing options.

Alupo said that Government will continue providing a good policy environment for the different stakeholders to provide services in this sector.

The expo was launched at the beginning of the week by the Ag. Director of housing at the lands ministry, Dave Khayangayanga, who represented the state minister of lands, housing and urban development, Hon Persis Namuganza. It run for five days on all cision Group platforms.
