Police names 12 victims of Kyegegwa car crash

The Police has named 12 victims of a fatal accident that occurred along Kyegegwa-Mubende Highway on Saturday morning.

The car crash happened a few meters away from Kibuye trading centre in Kyegegwa district at 9:30 am.

It involved Toyota Hiace (drone) Reg. No. UBF 554N and Toyota Hilux Reg. No. UAY 052Z.

The Rwenzori West Police Spokesperson, Vicent Twesigye, said four people died on the spot, and eight others sustained serious injuries.

He identified the dead as Amidu Kawuntura, the driver of an omnibus, Amidu Kagimu, passenger, and Caroline Assira, the Toyota Hilux occupant.

The fourth passenger who also died on the spot was not yet identified by the time of filing this story.

The other crash victims who were in the taxi are admitted to Kyegegwa Health Centre IV.

They are Jonah Akansasira of Kamwenge, William Odeke, a police officer attached to Wandegeya Police Station and the 39-year-old Amza.

Other passengers are Aisha aged 26, Olivia Biira ,31, Masika Masiriri, 23, Beam ale Zakayo, 23, and Peninah Biira, all of whom are from Bwera in Kasese district. There is also a 33-year-old Mbale cramis of Nyamwamba in Kasese.

What eyewitness say

Eyewitnesses told journalists on the scene of the accident that a fifth person died on the way to the health centre IV. However, Police is yet to confirm.

The Police didn't explain the cause of the accident, but eyewitnesses said the pickup truck swerved sharply to avoid a bodaboda rider and ended up ramming into a taxi bound for Kampala from the front.

The victims were pulled from the wreckage of the taxi, eyewitnesses said.
