UK’s trade envoy, Musenero meet over development of Kiira vehicle plant

UK’s trade envoy to Uganda, Lord Popat, has today met with Dr Monica Musenero, the Minister of Science, Technology, and Innovation over the development of the Kiira Vehicle plant in Jinja. 

The Ministry revealed that the discussion was on the potential of UK Export funding for the development of the plant located at Jinja industrial area in order to support Uganda’s industrialization agenda. 

The plant has been designed with the capacity to produce 5,000 vehicles annually. The facilities to be built include Assembly Shop and Plant Offices, Plant Circulation Roads, Power and Water Distribution Systems, Waste Management Facilities, Perimeter Fence and Gate Facilities, Drainage System and Whole Vehicle Test Facilities. 

In 2019, Kiira Motors Corporation and National Enterprise Corporation (NEC) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) for the Construction of the Kiira Vehicle Plant Start-Up Facilities (Phase I). The construction then commenced in February of the same year and was expected to take two and a half years. 

In May this year, Dr Elioda Tumwesigye, the former minister of science revealed that the construction project of the Kiira Motors Vehicle plant had reached 75%. 

“Kiira Motors Corporation will initially make buses and trucks so as to facilitate public transportation in the country,” he said.
