According to Ggoobi, the lack of proper oversight has contributed to mismanagement and theft of medicines and other medical supplies from the health centres.

The Permanent Secretary at the finance ministry and Secretary to the Treasury, Ramathan Ggoobi, has called for proper accountability of medical supplies dispatched by National Medical Stores ( NMS).

According to Ggoobi, the lack of proper oversight has contributed to mismanagement and theft of medicines and other medical supplies from the health centres.

" Whereas NMS distributes the medical supplies, it has no mandate to demand accountability before the next consignment is delivered," Ggoobi said.

He said the issue of accountability for medical supplies is an issue that must be immediately addressed.

The service delivery gap was a highlight of Ggoobi's visit to the new NMS  warehouse under construction at Kajjansi and the current warehouse in Entebbe today.

Responding to Ggoobi' observation, NMS pointed out mama kits which are supplied in excess compared to the number of deliveries registered in government health centres across the country, but many mothers are asked to buy their own kits when they go to deliver.
