The medical team of specialists that is thoroughly reviewing and treating the ailing Kawempe North MP, Muhammad Ssegirinya, has been revealed.

It comprises the executive director of Mulago National Referral Hospital Dr. Byarugaba Baterana, a heart specialist, specialist physician, specialist endocrinologist and Ssegirinya's personal physician.

The West Budama North East MP, Fox Odoi, who chairs the parliamentary committee on human rights, confirmed this team and said it was instructed by Parliament to review Ssegirinya and report today (Thursday, November 4).

“When he was admitted to Mulago, the diagnosis was done after several tests. A treatment regime was proposed, but the patient refused the treatment proposed. That is why we insisted that a new team is instituted to get a second opinion with the participation of his personal physician,” Odoi told New Vision this Thursday.

Odoi’s committee has already visited Ssegirinya at Mulago Hospital and a report on the health of the National Unity Platform MP, who has been on remand in Luzira Prison, will be presented to the Speaker today.

“Also note that his personal physician fully agrees with both the diagnosis and treatment already proposed. We presented a report yesterday and got the permission of the House to transmit it to the Minister of Health (Dr Ruth Aceng) with instructions to ensure Ssegirinya gets the best diagnosis and treatment,” he said.

Odoi said Aceng will also report on the recommendation for the further management of Ssegirinya, who has been bedridden for weeks.

"We could not debate the report (in the House on November 3) in the ordinary fashion because of the confidentiality issues related to personal health,” he said.

Ssegirinya and his Makindye West counterpart Allan Ssewanyana, who is also on remand, are facing several charges, including murder, attempted murder and aiding and abetting terrorism.

On October 25, the Masaka High Court said granting the two MPs bail would jeopardize investigations since they’re currently under trial.

Justice Lawrence Tweyanze said the lawmakers have the capacity to interfere with the investigations, including absconding from bail.

While applying for bail, the duo argued that they are suffering from grievous illnesses some resulting from torture by the security personnel, which cannot be effectively managed while under incarceration.
