A team of specialists has been constituted to thoroughly review and treat Kawempe North MP, Muhammad Ssegirinya, Parliament heard this Wednesday.

The chairperson of the parliamentary committee on human rights, Fox Odoi, said this during the plenary session presided over by Deputy Speaker Anita Among.

Odoi’s committee visited Ssegirinya at Mulago Hospital. He added that a report on the health of the National Unity Platform MP, who has been bedridden for weeks, will be presented to the Speaker tomorrow.

Ssegirinya and his Makindye West counterpart Allan Ssewanyana, who is also on remand, are facing several charges, including murder, attempted murder, and aiding and abetting terrorism.

On October 25, the Masaka High Court said granting the two MPs bail would jeopardize investigations since they’re currently under trial.

Justice Lawrence Tweyanze said the lawmakers have the capacity to interfere with the investigations, including absconding from bail.

While applying for bail, the duo argued that they are suffering from grievous illnesses some resulting from torture by the security personnel, which cannot be effectively managed while under incarceration.
