Hussein Mbalangu’s spell as Mbarara City FC boss started with a spectacular 3-1 victory in the new Startimes Uganda Premier League season against Soltilo Bright stars, Friday at Kakyeka Stadium.

Henry Kitegenyi gave the Ankole Lions the lead when he converted Solomon Okwalinga’s pass in 32 minutes of the first half.  Defender Ramathan Karim and Solomon Okwalinga were also on target in a match that was attended by close to 200 fans.

Despite losing key staff that included head coach Charles Livingston Mbabazi and his deputy Sadiq Sempijji and keys players that included Ivan Eyam all joining Arua Hills, the lions' new caretaker coach believes the win will boost their confidence ahead of their next two fixtures that will be played away from home.

“I am thankful to the fans for supporting me and the team. I think it’s an important win for us.”

Mbalangu replaced Kefa Kisala who spent only two weeks in Mbarara and will now be assisted by Charles Ssenyange Kadid and Jamada Mayanja as the goalkeeping coach.

Mbarara will now travel to Kabarore to face Tooro United in the Western derby and later face UPDF at the Military grounds in Bombo.
