Chemutai, Cricket Cranes win monthly USPA accolades

Olympic Gold medallist Peruth Chemutai has won the Nile Special Uganda Sports Press Association personality of August after being unanimously chosen by the sports scribe body at the monthly meeting on Monday at Imperial Royale Hotel, Kampala.

She beat Joshua Cheptegei who also won a gold in the 5,000m, and the Silverbacks who reached the quarterfinals of the AfroBasketball championship in Rwanda. The scribes also commended Express FC who won their first CECAFA Kagame Cup.

 Uganda’s men's cricket team was voted the best of September. The team won the Tr-Nations tournament held in Entebbe by beating Kenya and Nigeria.

The Cricket team beat Martin Musasu who won the Haspa Hamburg Marathon in Germany to the award. The crew of Yasin Nasser and Ali Katumba finished third in the Africa Rally Championship in Zambia and Volleyball Cranes who fifth at the Africa Volleyball Championship were commended.

USPA vice president Leon Ssenyange revealed that such recognitions motivate athletes.

“This recognition shows that we follow what different sports personalities do plus also identifying their efforts. We believe it motivates the winners or even those who have not won to perform harder,” he stated

Ssenyange also pointed out that the association is planning to introduce media excellence awards.
