Christopher Edward Mbowa a member of the Uganda Olympic Committee (UOC) medical commission has cautioned lacrosse athletes to be mindful of performance-enhancing drugs that can lead to doping violations.

"Your sports career can be cut short once you test positive. You have to be mindful of what you take as a sports person," noted Mboowa.

He revealed this during a session on doping with the lacrosse women's team at Seeta High in Mukono.

The camp was aimed at seeing how best to prepare the women's team for the World Lacrosse Women Championships in Maryland, USA next year.

73 women turned up for the camp and were taken through drills on ball passing, offensive and defensive approaches.

The camp was held for four days and a team of coaches was tasked to critically look at the athletes and see the best performers.

This was the first training camp held for the lacrosse team and according to Kenneth Kasule the general secretary of the Uganda Lacrosse Association, the camp has helped the players to improve on their fitness levels which were affected by the lockdown imposed to control the spread of COVID-19.

"The athletes have got the chance to play the game without any interference and surely are not going back home the same way they came,” noted Kasule.

The lacrosse women's team will be featuring in the World Lacrosse Championships for the first time in Canada. However, for the men, they previously took part in the world championships in both 2014 (USA) and 2018 (Israel).

Christine Ijawet one of the athletes who took part in the training session believes the camp greatly helped her improve her ball passing skills.

"My ball passing skills have been improved during the camp. Coach Keith Lubangakene has enabled me to improve so as to play the game with a lot of ease," Ijawet noted.

The number of athletes is set to be reduced to 40 from whom 18 will be selected and the final squad will feature for Team Uganda next year.
