IBANDA - The Ibanda Chief Magistrate’s Court has remanded a 21-year-old man to Nyabuhikye Prison on charges of child trafficking.

Damiano Niwariho, of Rweteka II, Mushunga in Ishongororo, Ibanda North County, Ibanda district was Thursday charged with two counts of aggravated child trafficking.

It is alleged that Niwariho trafficked two young girls, all aged 12 years. The charge contravenes Section 5 (a) of the Prevention of Trafficking in Persons Act.

Chief Magistrate Beatrice Kainza advised the accused not to say anything, saying her court has no jurisdiction to hear the case.

"You are therefore remanded to Nyabuhikye Prison until October 27 when his case will return for mention," Kainza said.

The prosecution alleges that on September 18, Niwariho told the parents of the teenage girls (Patience Kamusinguzi and Agatha Atuhaire) both of Rweteka II that he had secured jobs for them in a hotel. The unsuspecting parents agreed, allowing the girls to go work with him.

However, they later became suspicious of his real intentions and reported him to Police and he was arrested and charged accordingly.
