Preparations for the boys U-19 Cricket World Cup qualifiers are well and truly underway after Uganda Cricket Association (UCA) summoned 26 players for a training camp.

Rwanda will now host the qualifiers from September which were initially supposed to take place in Nigeria but had to be postponed due to the current pandemic.

The team will be coached by Ivan Thawithemwira (head coach) and Robinson Turinawe (assistant) who have their work cut out for them.

“We went through a professional procedure; we picked them from different regions and as usual from the different parts of Uganda using the schools system. We summoned 56 players to Kampala and we did the talent identification process for one month. We picked kids who were fit, kids who were ready and committed to playing at national level,” said assistant coach Robinson Turinawe.

They played a small tournament before the lockdown in which they were thoroughly looked at and that data was used to select the 26.

Unfortunately for the coaches and selectors they couldn’t make any inroads in preparation because the country went into a lockdown and sports were stopped so they will be going back to the very beginning.

The boys will officially start their high performance session on Wednesday for about three weeks after which they will pick the 14 who they will travel with to Rwanda.

Turinawe said in the event that the boys qualify for the world cup they will go for a high performance camp in India to polish the boys.
