Police has recovered a car belonging to President Uhuru Kenyatta official fleet entourage that was stolen in Nairobi last week.

There were conflicting reports about where the state of art BMW 735 series bullet proof car was found some sources told New Vision that the car was abandoned in Tororo, while others said it was recovered in Wandegeya after the suspects realized they were being trailed.

“It is true we have recovered it in Uganda,” Asan Kasingye confirmed, but refused to divulge further details.

Kenyan media quoted a Kenyan Security officer saying that the car had been recovered in Tororo. “We have been informed that it was found on the roadside in Tororo and now it is being taken to Kampala before we get it,” said Bungoma County CID boss Peter Mabeya, who was among those trailing it.

The operation to recover the car was jointly carried by officers of the Flying Squad from both countries and the Interpol who had been alerted by their counterparts in Kenya after a key suspect a Nakuru mechanic, Aggrey Odhiambo who owned a garage was arrested.

Shortly after it was stolen on Wednesday, the car was taken to a garage in Nakuru for alterations before it proceeded to the border then crossed to Uganda.

Another suspect who is believed to have driven the car to Malaba before handing over to his colleagues in Uganda was arrested at a hotel in Bungoma town on Monday night.

Security sources told Sunday Vision that another suspect had also been arrested

By midday on Wednesday, the car had been driven to Kampala though police remained tightlipped where it had been parked. However sources said they were planning to hand it to their Kenyan colleagues who came in shortly after the recovery.

On Friday however State House spokesperson, Manoah Esipisu released details to the media of how car that went missing denying that it was the Presidents official car that had been stolen.

“This was an ordinary car. It is not armour-plated. It is not a limousine. It is not part of the Presidential fleet. It is not a Presidential Escort car,” said Esipisu in a statement.

Esipisu admitted that the driver David Muchiri part of the Presidential escort team.  “On Wednesday, at 9.30pm, the car’s driver, Chief Inspector Machui of the Kenya Police Service, was accosted by four armed men near Ruai, Nairobi.

The men drove the Chief Inspector around the city for a few hours, setting him free at about 2.30am at Mihango, next to the Administration Police Training College, Embakasi. They roughed him up but he is not in distress,” Esipisu said in a statement.

Esipisu also said that the driver was robbed of KShs 60,000 (Ugsh 1.7m) in cash and a mobile phone.

The attack highlights how daring criminals have become and the worrying levels of insecurity in the country. Just recently, an aide of Deputy President William Ruto was also recently carjacked along State House Road and abandoned in Mlolongo, Machakos County.
