AIPS President Gianni Merlo will be in Uganda as part of the Uganda Sports Press Association 14th Road Safety Campaign in Entebbe on September 20.

Merlo agreed to be part of the activities to campaign against road carnage that claimed four senior USPA members in Lugazi in 2001, according to the USPA President Mark Namanya.

The 14th edition of the campaign coincides with the AIPS 90th anniversary and during his four-day stay in Kampala, Merlo will attend Mass to pray for deceased USPA members at Christ the King Church in Kampala on September 18.

“We invited the AIPS president to campaign with us because road accidents are a global issue and involving a high profile person can help drive our message against it,” Namanya said on Tuesday.

Merlo will also crown the Nile Special USPA sports personality of August Moses Kipsiro at a dinner at Imperial Royale Hotel before the safety campaign in Entebbe the following day.

Kipsiro was unanimously voted for the Nile Special USPA award that comes with a cash prize of sh500,000 on Monday.

USPA picked Kipsiro for winning the 10,000m Commonwealth gold medal at the 2014 Glasgow at Hampden Park, Scotland. He clocked 27 minutes and 56.11 seconds to beat Kenyan Josphat Bett by 0.03 seconds and Canada’s Cameron Levins by 0.12 seconds.

Winnie Nanyondo, an 800m bronze medalist at the Glasgow games, was commended for her performance.

The rally crew of Umar Mayanja and Leone Ssenyange, KCCA and City Oilers basketball clubs and the U-19 national rugby team were commended for good performances they exhibited at various international competitions during the month.
