The pace proved too fast for Moses Kipsiro on Sunday as he failed to defend his 5000m Commonwealth title.

The New Delhi double gold medalist had to settle for eighth place in the 12.5 lap race where Kenya took gold and silver.

Caleb Ndiku and team-mate Isaiah Koech engaged a blistering pace to take the first two positions in 13 miutes 12:07 and 13:13:06 respectively.

Kipsiro, who like in New Delhi has also entered the 10000m, finished in 13:28:23.

Timothy Toroitch was the second Ugandan in 13:35:02 in eleventh position followed by Moses Kibet four places away.

At first it seemed like Kibet would be Uganda’s best runner in Hampden Park. He kept in second position and at the 3000m mark even took charge with a 10m lead.

But he was after another 5000 meters overtaken by the Kenyan trio of Ndiku, Koech and New Zealand’s Zane Robertson.

Kipsiro kept several paces behind. He then seemed to be recovering, pacing up for the final kick with two laps to go.

But he was at that point almost involved in accident after New Zealand’s Thomas Farrel was tripped. Kipsiro however managed to sidestep the melee but in the process lost crucial steps.
