Eastern region could be on their way to a second Castle Lite inter region golf title since 2011 after taking the lead on day one at Jinja Club.

Handicap 5 lady golfer, Eva Magala inspired the ‘wise men from the East’ in taking the lead when she returned what happened to be the best score of the day (68nett).

Her birdie on the 18th hole was greeted by loud cheers from the gallery as the determined Easterners took a 14 point gap in-front of defending champions, Western who are second.

“We are at home and have to win this tournament. Every one of our best players has to maintain and play to his handicap because we now have 80% chances of winning it,” Magala said after the day one action.

All the ladies on the Eastern side were among the best 15 players, whose scores counted for their day one lead, in the two-day medal format of play event.

Rita Mukasine (72 nett), Samalie Naikomba (74nett) and Petra Nalwoga (74nett) were among the best with Andrew Ongurapusi (69nett) Sunday Lulet (71), Eddy Kasaija (72) and Jimmy Okware among the top ten.

Defending champions, Western who are closely following the leaders were led by Grace Kasango (70nett), Peace Kabasweka (72nett), Fred Baziraki (71nett) and Denis Otim (73).

The western side is missing some of their star players who helped them win last year after they were beaten in their own qualifiers to the tournament.

Rose Azuba (71nett), Betty Alikyogera (72nett), Gerald Kabuye (73nett) and Katy Kabenge (74nett) led the way for Buganda who is placed third with 1125nett scores.

Northern who missed last year’s action are languishing in fourth position and have to pray that Robert Oluba, Edwin Okwong, Lillian Anguparu, Edward Onek and Hillary Adam who are the most experienced players on their squad can improve further in Saturday’s last round.

Each region is represented by twenty players, four of which are ladies. The best fifteen scores count for each team’s final placing.

Competition is limited to players of handicap 18 (men) and 24 (ladies).
