Old students of St Peters College Tororo in partnership with Makerere University and Uganda Martyrs University Nkozi have launched a Bernard Onyango Academic Excellence Awards.

The annual award will be given in classes A and B to students who excel academically. The inaugural awards this Friday will be given to students who excelled at St. Peter’s College Tororo.

“Bernard Onyango was an exemplary achiever academically and as a civil servant whose work extended beyond borders,” said Wilbrod Humphrey Owor. “When Onyango was alive he promised a gift to any student who would score results similar to his when he was college.”

“With men like Onyango, Ugandans have their own role model to emulate,” said Owor. “We hope in future, subsequent awards will go beyond former Tororo College.”

The chairman of the awards committee, Onapito Ekomoloit lamented about the poor standards of the school which was of repute in the past.

“Meanwhile scoring A is not a big deal in Kampala schools, B or C can be the best in up country schools,”
said Onapito. “We hope with this award, Tororo College, will rise and shine again. Like many institutions in Uganda, it has gone through tough times.”

The award comes with bursaries and a monetary package of sh5m for the A class. Details of the pioneer winners are to be revealed this Friday during a posh dinner to crown the event. There will be a key note address at Makerere University at 2:00pm by former Prime Minister Prof.  Apolo Nsibambi before a dinner at Silver Springs Hotel.

The MUK academic registrar Alfred Masikye Namoah said the university has sustained the yardstick of excellence set by Onyango.

“The only changes, at Makerere University are; bigger numbers of students, computerization and the graduation ceremony now takes seven days,” said Namoah. “Besides that you can now go home with your academic transcripts.”

“The admission is still strictly on merit although the Nasser Road forgeries are getting smarter and perfect,” said Namoah.
