The body of Olavi Matovu has been recovered after 36 hours of search on Lake Victoria, Police have confirmed.

Olavi Matovu drowned on Sunday 400 metres from a marina at Munyonyo. Attempts by his friends to rescue him were futile as he could not be sighted anywhere in the water after he dived.

Police Marine Unit together with the Special Forces and air force soldiers found the body on Tuesday afternoon.

Police spokesperson, Fred Enanga told the New Vision that they had recovered the body 400 metres from the Munyonyo marina in a lagoon, coincidentally the same area he had disappeared. He said the body was recovered afloat the water with flesh swellings and a bit lighter than his presumed weight.

The spot where Olavi dived in from is 18 feet deep and 400 metres from the nearest land in sight.

A preliminary investigation on the body by the police surgeons indicates that Matovu had external injuries on his body and a paper card fixed to his forehead.

Matovu’s body has been submitted for further investigation by pathologists at Mulago hospital.
