The Ugandan golf team takes to the Devonvale Golf Estate Club in Cape Town today Tuesday confident that they can better their ever best 4th place finish at the Africa Zone 6 championships.

The championship tees off with a singles round before the Foursomes the following day and the Better Ball contest and singles thereafter.

But they will have to contend with 13-time record champions South Africa and Zimbabwe who coach Deo Akope believe are the major obstacles to his side’s chances.

“The teams to beat here are South Africa and Zimbabwe because they have vast junior development programs which have been running for over 8 years from where they pick their players,” Akope told a press conference before the team left on Sunday.

But he contends that the training his team went through before they left will help them overcome any opponent.

Akope said the team had focused much on the Foursomes and the Ball better Ball formats in training because they are the ones they will encounter in the championship.

He said the team had also gone through the rules and technicalities of match play so that the players are conversant with them to avoid confusion as they play.

According to team leader Kiryowa Kiwanuka, the team arrived safely at 4pm in South Africa. After registration the team took a leisurely walk around the course on Monday to get a feel of it before a practice round later.

Uganda has been participating in the annual event since 2002. Last year they finished 6th in Mauritius.
