THE Chief of Defence Forces Gen. Edward Katumba Wamala has inaugurated new board members of the army Wazalendo SACCOS, urging them to fuse team spirit and innovation so as to spur the scheme to greater heights.
During the launch at the army headquarters, Katumba challenged the new directors to emulate their predecessors and even perform better so as to drive forward Wazalendo Savings and Credit Cooperative Societies Organization (WASACCO), the biggest in the country.
Tracing the history of the organization and the achievements Katumba advised, “you should work as a team not to fail but move the SACCOS forward,” Katumba said and pledged none interference from the army leadership with the management of the organization.
The board members include: Capt. K Kagina, Lance Corporal Mwase; Pt. Bumba MH AND Warrant Officer II Mwebaze N. The supervision committee (SUPCO) chairman is Lt. Col. R Onata, deputized by Maj. Mike Kwezi while Lt. D Tayebwa is the Secretary.
“We are not going to do anything to arm twist you to do anything that is detrimental to your clients. Not me, not even the Joint Chief of Staff (Maj. Gen. Wilson Mbadi), not any member in the army leadership,” Katumba said.
“Bring in new ideas and go out and advocate for the saving culture,” he said, moments after giving out mementos to the outgoing office bearers.
The outgoing Vice Chairman SUPCO Maj. Alan Kitanda called for diligence on the part of the incoming SUPCO members saying, the organization at present boasts total assets of sh 109b, a loan portfolio of sh87b and a share and capital reserve of sh 75b, making it the biggest SACCOS in the country.
“I have just returned from the field and people out there are still asking a lot of questions which you still have to answer,” Katumba said. The performance of Wazalendo, he said, had demystified the widely held view that SACCOS cannot be effectively run and urged the members to share ideas with other SACCOS.
