The East African Community secretariat in Arusha will tomorrow (Friday) hold a memorial to commemorate the 1994 Rwandan genocide against the Tutsi.

According to a statement issued Thursday, the memorial organised by the EAC secretariat and Rwandan High Commission in Tanzania will be attended by former Tanzanian President Benjamin Mkapa.

Jesca Eriyo, the chairperson of the organizing committee and the EAC Deputy Secretary General in charge of productive and social sectors said the event will be an expression of solidarity with Rwanda and aim to promote tolerance and peaceful co-existence in the region.

Activities during the memorial to take place at the EAC headquarters will include a walk, lighting a commemorative flame, genocide exhibitions, documentary/movie shows, public lectures on genocide, memorial songs and a vigil with a bonfire.

Rwanda has dedicated this week to mourn and mark the 20th anniversary of the country's genocide in which at least 800,000 people, mostly Tutsi, were killed.

Official mourning began three months ago with a flame of remembrance touring towns and villages across the country.
President Yoweri Museveni was in Kigali on Monday and attended the national commemoration which was the culmination of the remembrance.

President Kagame lit a flame that will burn for 100 days, the length of time it took government soldiers and the Interahamwe Hutu militiamen to carry out the genocide.
