As the curtains fell down on a two month project that has been running on all Vision Group platforms intended to tell the story of the men and women behind songs that impact society, twenty local artistes were on Friday hosted to an all star event at the Serena gardens.

One by one, they walked to a red carpet entrance with live coverage on Vision Group television channels,Bukedde TV, Bukedde TV2, Urban and TV West.

Different artistes with different approach to music but having one thing in common, they sing to change situations in their communities through their songs.

Dan Mugula and Annet Nandujja will be a rare appearance on your usual television or radio channels but trust me if you take time and listen to their music, you will be amazed at how rich and meaningful the content is.

Well, the young people may not relate with these two but there are a number of relatively younger artistes who have resisted the temptation of ‘just drop the hit and do another’  as one of the artistes called it but have taken time to reflect on the issues that surround them and composed songs relevant to those situations.

Truth is I have found myself nodding to a particular beat and after it stops, I start asking myself what is was about and I can’t even remember a line or two but the power of music can be felt when the words ring in mind all day and push you into self searching session.

When there was an increasing rate of early marriage, Hassa came up with the Kaleke Kasome song, Bobi Wine after experiencing the wrath of KCCA law enforcers composed Tugambire Ku Jennifer.

As for Judith Babirye, she knew if she encourage women to be patient in their marriages, the rate of marriage breakups would come down and that’s when ‘Maria’ was composed, Angella Katatumba put up a spirited fight against environmental degradation with her ‘lets go green song’.

Those are just a few of them but as they were recognized each one of them had a song that had changed a life, a community and the country.

Just like Vision Group’s Chief Operations Officer,Gervase Ndyanabo noted, every time you set out to do something, make sure its going to have a positive impact to society.

The Musician Making a difference was a Twaweza initiative carried out in association with Vision Group and Buzz events.
