Acting Chief Justice (CJ) Steven Kavuma has revealed that plans are underway for the Judiciary to construct a new building soon that will accommodate the Supreme Court and the Court of Appeal at the High Court premises in Kampala.

The Supreme Court and the Court of Appeal as well as the Civil and the Land Divisions of the High Court are currently accommodated in expensive rented houses located at Kololo and Nakasero respectively.

Kavuma, who is also the Acting Deputy Chief Justice (DCJ) was making remarks at the opening of the 18th Judges’ Conference held at the Imperial Resort Beach, Entebbe.

He said that the Judiciary has also allocated substantial amount of its budget to build additional courts in certain areas of Uganda where there were none at all before.

Also revealing that the new court halls are to cater for people with disabilities and the elderly, Kavuma said that he was scheduled to open the recently completed court hall in Karamoja.

He hailed the appointing authority for appointing two judges to sit at the Industrial Court, which has been in limbo for almost a decade due to lack of enough judges.

“This appointment will go a long way in solving indusial labour disputes,” Kavuma noted.

Kavum vowed that the Judiciary will continue to co-operate with other anti-graft institutions in the country with a view to curbing the cancerous vice of corruption for the overall good and benefit of the Ugandan society.
