As I walked through life’s cluttered path, I came across very interesting, perhaps quite intriguing explanations as to why many people venture into multiple sexual encounters. In fact, given chance, some people could easily have sex with the whole world!  And when a young boy in Primary Five was asked in class in 1992 why people like sex, he replied without mincing that “because it is sweet”.

So sweet indeed it is, but sweetness is only the tip of the iceberg. Just over 15 years ago, I took off time to engage in missionary work that saw me visit a couple of prisons in my home area.

One thing that shocked me was the number of children below 15 behind bars for sexual offences. I said to myself then, that possibly these are the unlucky ones, for there could be many more that go away with it!

As children turn into young adults and later adults, sexual encounters become more of an addiction, a norm rather than an exception for many.

But why? Just why is sex such an unavoidable encounter for many?  Whoever invented the monster HIV/AIDS, knew so well that he would make a good catch for as long as sex is merely seen as a sweet thing-after all, with the exception of diabetic cases, majority of the people love sweet and sugary stuff.

Without much recourse to theological interpretation, sex is carefully mentioned in the Bible as a means for procreation, and this is good; but it is also pleasurable, which quite rhymes with the modern likeness of sweetness. Let us explore the critical reasons adduced for sex in addition to this sweetness business:

If you say it is sweet: Sweetness is a mere adjective that can be expounded into the comparative ‘sweeter’ or sweetest; but the number of sweet people in this world is innumerable-so how many can you have in a lifetime?

Others say they have sex because ‘she’s hot’; but this too is an adjective and there are thousands  and in fact millions carrying a comparative tag of ‘hotter’ and ‘hottest’

Some have sex because ‘he is loaded with money’; oh, you’ve not yet seen, because some people out there really have money. So will you keep trotting just because of money?

Others have sex because ‘he’s away on safari’; but what if the next time it is you on safari? And, how many safaris could one make in a lifetime?

Others are drawn by ‘she’s so cute’; oh no, cuter ones are yet to be born. So will you keep hovering on and on?

Some say because ‘she’s from a good family’; but you haven’t been to all the families in the country. What if you moved a little and saw better and best families-will you keep keeping on?

Others stray because ‘he’s boring’; and what if he feels the same about you? But do you know how many people are exciting, very exciting and extremely exciting in this world? Will you keep exploring?

Others say ‘she’s a workmate and we get along’; and how many jobs might you do in a lifetime? There’ll certainly be someone you get along with

Here’s the ideal…. “S/he’s my spouse, it’s our obligation and it is fun”.  Herein lies the seal that guarantees sex the ultimate pleasure. Nobody can ever achieve its greatest reward by engaging with the whole world, never.

One of my best artistes in Lauryn Hill mirrored in one of her hit songs “Doo Woop That thing”;

“Girls you know you'd better watch out, Some guys, some guys are only about
That thing, that thing, that thing
That thing, that thing, that thing
Guys you know you'd better watch out
Some girls, some girls are only about
That thing, that thing, that thing
That thing, that thing, that thing”

Yes, indeed some guys, some girls are only about “That thing”, but there’s more to life than just that thing.
