KAMPALA - Yusuf Karmali Alibhai, an elder of the Indian community and father to Prof. Mahmood Mamdani, has died.

Alibhai, 92, passed on about 15 minutes into the New Year 2014 on Wednesday at his home in Buziga, a Kampala suburb.

He was buried the same day at the Muslim cemetery in Lugogo off Jinja Road after prayers at Ithnaashri Jamatkhana mosque on Nakivubo Road.

Alibhai was a businessman in his youth while his son Mamdani is a prominent international scholar based at Makerere University and Columbia University in the US.

According to the ex-chairman of the Indian Association of Uganda, Rajni Tailor, Alibhai had battled sickness for quite a long time and had been in and out of hospital prior to his demise.

“I met Alibhai a few years ago. We used to mingle very well,” Taylor reminisced.

Mamdani said the family would hold a memorial service for the deceased next week.
