The Kicking inability continues to haunt Uganda clubs and it was the major cause to Heathens 19-11 defeat by traditional rivals DMark Kobs at Legends Rugby Club on Saturday in the 2013/2014 Nile Special Premier Rugby League first round fixture.
Jasper Ochan missed two penalties and a conversion while Benon Kiiza missed two penalties that if all these were scored or even three only were scored then victory would be on their side.
Kobs winger Justin Kimono (middle) proves a handful for the Heathens as he makes a try
Justin Kimono gave Kobs an early 5-0 lead courtesy of a try in the first minute of the first half but Heathens replied with a penalty courtesy of Benon Kiiza to the score 5-3.
With pressure mounting on both sides, Scot Oluoch unleashed his strength on his former employees scoring try and later converted by James Ijongat to hand the hosts Kobs a 12-3 half time lead in a bruising tie that lived to its billing.
In the second half, fully charged and determined to end Heathen’s dominance in Uganda rugby, Oscar Kalyango added a centre post try for Kobs and later converted by Ijongat to stretch the lead to 19-3.
Heathens fought back and replied with a try by Allan Otim plus a penalty and conversion by Ochan to end the score 19-11.
“We just had errors in our line-outs and kicks failed to work out that is how we lost. However we are not scared and we have not lost hope because there is the second round,” Heathens team captain Michael Wokorach stated in an interview after the game.
Kobs’ team captain Brian Odong attributed their victory to team work and sticking to the game plan.
In Entebbe, Lira Bulls are yet to get a win this season as they lost 41-10 to host Entebbe Mongers at the House of pain.
The League continues on Saturday in Entebbe, Lira, at Kyadondo and Legends Kampala Rugby Club.
