Uganda v Papua New Guinea

DESPITE securing sponsorship to Singapore for the prestigious Six Nations Cup at the last hour, the She Cranes players still had to part with half of their bonuses (sh4.6m) to cater for travel fines that were not of their making.

After New Vision had highlighted their financial plight on Thursday, the She Cranes were fortunate to secure 12 travel tickets from government on Friday.

However, due to bureaucracy, the team were only able to secure the offer on Saturday morning during the teams’ flag off ceremony held at round 11am —two hours to departure time.

“The jam along the Entebbe highway was not friendly to us and on top of that the long queue at the check point outside the airport affected our planned check-in time,” the federation’s general secretary Annet Kisomose said.

Each player had to forfeit $150 (sh380,000) for a rescheduled booking.

Thankfully, the hitch didnt seem to affect the team yesterday as they beat the Republic of Ireland 54-41 at the Zhongshan Park.

Uganda’s skipper Peace Proscovia netted 44 goals, Hadija Nakabuye six and Martha Soigi four to help the She Cranes to their first victory.
