On 16th October 2013, I was officially accredited by H.E. Jacob Zuma President of the Republic of South Africa as Uganda High Commissioner to the Republic of South Africa.
The function took place at the Sefako Makgatho Presidential Guest House in Pretoria. Other diplomats from USA, UK, Israel, Cape Verde, Venezuela, Austria, Greece, Algeria, Senegal and Mongolia were also accredited. President Zuma said that the Republic of South Africa shall continue to deepen good economic, political & social ties with Uganda and other countries as well.
President Jacob Zuma practically singled out Uganda, describing Uganda as one of the best countries in the world. He made reference to his last visit to Uganda in July 2010 when he was told a tale “that God created Uganda last. God put all the beautiful things in Uganda including Lake Victoria (Nalubale) before He travelled to settle in Cape Town, for a long rest. Meaning that Uganda and Cape Town in South Africa are the two most beautiful places in the world”. He urged Diplomats to visit these two beautiful places. At this point, my self and Mr. Wilson Kajwengye an official from the Uganda High Commission who accompanied me for the ceremony stood up in recognition of President Zuma’s good remarks about Uganda.
I thank the President of the Republic of Uganda H.E Yoweri Kaguta Museveni for giving me the opportunity to serve Uganda serve as the High Commissioner in South Africa. Uganda has had solid relationship with the Republic of South Africa for a very long time especially during campaigns that ended the Apartheid regime. Working with able Foreign Service Officers, notably Mr. Kayiza Matovu, Ms Hellen Nziza Matovu and Ms Martha Okumu, I am going to strengthen the existing bilateral relationship between Uganda and South Africa. On commercial diplomacy, we shall woo more Foreign Direct Investments to Uganda for creation of jobs and ultimately expanding the tax revenue base of Government. We shall also work with tour operators to encourage tourists from South Africa to make Uganda their choice destinations. Finally I will encourage Ugandans in South Africa to invest in Uganda to help grow the economy.
