Winning the inaugural East Africa rugby super cup is Heathens main focus and will be the motivating factor in Saturday’s first leg fixture against Kenya champions Nakuru.
Team captain Alex Mubiru disclosed during a press briefing at the launch of the tournament on Tuesday at Kyadondo Rugby Club.
“Yes we want the sh8m cash prize but our major focus is winning the tournament and set history as the first club to win the annual tournament,” Mubiru stated.
The Super Cup will be an annual event between the Kenya and Uganda league champions played on home and away format. The first leg is in Nakuru on Saturday.
Mubiru added that Heathens last featured in Kenya as a club in the Enterprises Cup which they failed to win, but this is the time to prove his club’s supremacy in the region.
“We are aware of their weaknesses and strength, but we are prepared to make a mark as this is another time and only chance to prove the strength of Uganda rugby especially after the poor performance of the Rugby Cranes,” Mubiru added.
Heathens, who leave for Nakuru tomorrow, have swept all the national trophies including Nile Special Rugby premier League, Uganda Cup and the national sevens trophy. Their target now is to extend their influence beyond the borders of Uganda.
The tournament is sponsored by Coca Cola, Security group, Studio 256 and UAP Insurance.
