SAM Gombya is tall all the time but, unfortunately for the Riham Warriors, he is only interested some of the time.
Framed in 7 feet and one inch, the tallest player in the Airtel National Basketball League (ANBL) is potentially every rival’s worst nightmare.
But as the Warriors have painfully discovered, Gombya’s real strength is not actually his intimidating exterior. Rather, it is his attitude.
“When he decides to play, he can really play,” confessed Warriors patron Ambrose Tashobya ahead of today’s appetising clash with the Falcons at the YMCA.
The two teams are separated by some distance in the ANBL table, with defending champions Warriors second with 35 and the Falcons seventh with 29 points but at their best there is little to separate the two sides that met in last year’s final.
Both are loaded with some of the best talent in Ugandan basketball and for the Warriors that includes the player who is closer to the rim than everyone else.
When the ball finds Gombya under the offensive board, it is as good as two points and this fact inspired the Warriors comeback 65-63 win over the UCU Canons two weeks ago.
Gombya came off the bench in the second-half with the Warriors trailing 36-20 and went on to score 16 points in 19 minutes to turn the tables.
Falcons coach Gad Eteu will be hoping his frontcourt is ready just in case Gombya shows up ready to play.
Meanwhile, the UCU Lady Canons will be favourites to defeat reigning champions KCCA Leopards in the top of the table women’s match.
