FLAVIA Namakula overcame a shaky start to claim second place in the Tanzania Ladies Golf Open in Arusha on Sunday.
Namakula who was seven strokes behind Tanzanian Hawa Wanyeche having scored 79 in the first round on Saturday improved by two strokes in the second round on the day to surge 12 shots behind the leader.
The Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) golfer then turned in 76 in the last round of the 54 holes tournament for an aggregate of 232, beating Tanzanian Madina Iddi to second place by three strokes.
The Ugandan who tied with Madina in second position after 36 holes struggled on the dry fairways.
“I didn’t have enough time to adjust to the dry course. The greens were good so I would have certainly played better if I had arrived earlier,” Namakula told New Vision Sport by phone from Arusha before embarking on a 925km journey back to Kampala by road.
Francis Lina finished fourth in the Tanzania’s premier women’s golf event. Tanzanian Angel Eaton did not compete in the tournament because she was unwell.
Namakula who mentors Judith Komugisha travelled with the 16-year-old handicap 14 player who had the best net score (72) in the third round.
Komugisha who was in the tournament for exposure scored 268 gross (91 91 86).
