UGANDAN champion Jas Mangat, running second in the Mountain Gorilla Rwanda Rally appeared destined to clinch the 2013 Africa Rally Championship until he was sidelined by mechanical failure in the closing stages in Kigali on Sunday.
Mangat was comfortable with second position behind Rwandan Davite Giancarlo with Zambian title rival Jassy Singh down in fifth.
Mangat just need to score at least nine points more than Singh to claim the Africa title with Rally of Madagascar to spare but his car broke down. Rwandan Christakis Fitidis who has competed in Uganda for two seasons had firmly created a gap between Singh and Mangat but mechanical failure on the Ugandan champion’s Mitsubishi Evo X denied him continental silverware in Kigali.
Rwanda’s Davite won the race with Fitidis and Elfter Mitraros finishing second and third respectively. Singh finished fifth but scored 15 points to take his tally to 81 points, just two behind Mangat.
Mangat will now have to face off Singh in Madagascar in November in what is expected to be thrilling title decider in November.
It is the first time in over 10 years that Africa championship is decided on last day of the championship which is usually in Madagascar.
Ismail Otega and Patrick Kiweewa and Abbas Bukenya dropped out of the three-day race.
