November 2: Kampala Zone Five Afrobasket Fundraising Gala
MOHAMMED Santur and the rest of Team Uganda management plan to make the next Zone Five Afrobasket Qualifiers the finest moment of local basketball.
It is an ambition that means only one thing –– the national men’s and women’s teams qualifying for the Afrobasket tournament. Meaning, it is also an ambition that requires a lot of one thing - money.
Consequently, Santur and his team have organised a fundraising gala for the national teams for November 2 at Serena Hotel hoping to trigger the financial momentum required for the road ahead.
The function is expected to announce the collection of at least sh150m from corporate Uganda, money that will be poured into creating quality preparations for the national teams.
“We just want to give our players the best possible environment going into the tournament,” Santur told New Vision following a series of productive moves in recent days.
Talks between Team Uganda management and City Oil and City Tyres ended with the sister companies agreeing to use their corporate gravitas to help organise the fundraising gala.
The two companies will use their letter heads to write to their business partners about the merits of getting on board the national basketball cause.
City Oil and City Tyres have already promised substantial funds to the event.
By all accounts, Santur and his team are on course to a successful Zone Five tournament, which will be held in Uganda, July 2014.
In principal, Team Uganda have reached an agreement with a major soft drink maker, which will take care of the teams’ kit, refreshments and air tickets for foreign-based players who will be flown to Uganda before and during the tournament.
