The Minister of State for primary health care Sarah Opendi presided over the launched of a new product; ‘Magic Pit’ at Serena hotel on Friday. Magic Pit is a strain of harmless natural bacteria that breakes down sewage into carbon dioxide and oxygen leaving only water that is free from waterborne diseases. This process removes smells and flies in 24 hours and empties a pit within 2 weeks.
The Minister commended the product and said it would be of great use to schools which use pit latrines. She noted that the magic pit will help government to save over shs. 3billion spent on the construction pit latrines in schools annually. “It will also help fight diseases caused due to poor sanitation.” She said. “Most of the diseases we get can be avoided if only people were conscious of their health.” Added the Health Minster; Sarah Opendi.
According to Lohnann Beams, the designer of the product, “Magic pit is quite effective in restoring hygiene. It reduces mortality rate caused by poor hygiene.” He said.
He added that if you use one sachet you add 10-20 litres and then pour into a pit latrine, the product will be active for 9 months. “You will stay free from the files and smelly latrines.
Magic Pit is produced by Leg Bio Product in South Africa. The company has opened a branch in Kampala.
