HOIMA - Two people have died after eating fox meat in Kyangwali sub-county, Hoima district.
The duo, only identified as Joseph and Expedito, were residents of Ngurwe village in Kasonga parish.
According to Frederick Byenume, the Hoima district health inspector, the two died on Wednesday, a day after eating the meat.
He told Saturday Vision that villagers hunted down the wild animal on Monday, after it bit two other locals. “When it was killed on Tuesday, instead of burying it, they roasted its meat and ate it,” Byenume explained.
Quoting relatives, Byenume said shortly after eating the meat, the two developed stomach complications and were rushed to Kituti Health Centre, where Joseph died.
Expedito died on his way to Mulago Hospital, where he was referred to on Wednesday.
The health inspector said four other people, of the 50 who ate the meat, were admitted to Kituti Health Centre, complaining of stomach complications.
However, Byenume said they are still investigating the exact cause of death since fox meat is not known to be harmful to humans.
He said the condition of those still admitted, by press time, was stable, adding that the patients were being treated on painkillers.
