SOROTI - A 26-year-old woman has been arrested over inflicting severe injuries on her son that led to his death.
Selina Iyamet (right), a resident of Akuya village, Gweri sub-county in Soroti district, allegedly attacked 12-year-old Emmanuel Ojur for boiling an egg without her permission.
Ojur was a pupil of Omugenya Primary School in Soroti.
Ayub Waiswa, the officer in charge of criminal investigations at Soroti Police Station, said the incident happened at around 1:00pm on Tuesday.
“The victim didn’t steal the egg. He just picked and boiled it because he was hungry.
"I advise parents to counsel their children when they make mistakes instead of causing aggravated harm to them,” Waiswa said.
He said Iyamet, while pestering the victim to explain who permitted him to boil the egg, picked a mingling stick and beat him until he collapsed.
Waiswa said eyewitnesses, who rushed to the boy’s rescue after hearing him scream, advised the mother to take him to a health centre.
He explained that when Iyamet realised that her son died before they reached the health centre, she abandoned his body at the roadside and attempted to flee before she was arrested by residents.
Waiswa said Iyamet would face murder charges.
Iyamet’s neighbour, William Enyasu, said she had a misunderstanding with her husband who left her and went to live with a widow in the same area.
