THE tennis fraternity will for the first in more than 10 years endure the humbling experience of watching a men‘s singles final without a home player.
Defending David Oringa was showed the exit at the semi-final stage by Rwanda’s Dieu-donne Habyimbere 6-3,6-3 before his compatriot Duncan Mugabe was controversially beaten by Rwandan veteran Jean Claude Gasigwa to inflict more pain on the hosts at Kampala Club on Friday.
Driven ‘mad’ by two controversial calls by umpire Henry Kiiza which ultimately cost him the match, Mugabe usually a clam player showed his frustration by hitting the racket, kicking the air and pacing around the court, as shocked officials and spectators looked on in disbelief.
Meanwhile, in the ladies single, Zimbabwean Fadzai Mawirise beat Kenya’s Shufaa Changawa 6-1,6-2 to qualify for the finals were she will take on Rwanda’s Ngabire Megane who outclassed Tanzania’s Rehema Athumani 6-0,6-3.
