EDITOR: Although I am not a Catholic, I am thrilled by the election of the former Archbishop of Buenos Aires, Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio, as the new Pope. The man’s character is captivating and refreshing as he is not bothered in the least by the trappings of power and opulence in the Vatican. His gigantic office has not swept him off his feet and he has firmly remained himself. A pope who hugs people and laughs merrily and jokes with fellow clerics and laity alike is an extraordinary one. It is very clear he is in office to serve and not to be served. His humour and down to earth character is endearing and magnetic and yet he is a no-nonsense person as the Curia might soon learn. I was nearly moved to tears when I saw his picture interfacing with a journalist who held him by both hands. He has indeed demystified the papacy and I hope he does not go the way of Pope John Paul I. May God bless him.
