Gulu High School closed has been closed hardly a month into the new term after the students protested delayed breakfast. During the unrest on Monday, Police fired tear gas to disperse the rowdy students who destroyed part of the school wall fence and broke window panes.

The students started rioting when the school cooks did not prepare porridge for breakfast following a sit down strike alleging that their jobs were at stake.
The District Education Officer (DEO) Rev. Vincent Oceng Ocen told some of the rioting students that the process of recruiting non-teaching staff is normal in all schools.

“We regret the situation but also condemn your actions of pushing down the wall fence of the school. After consulting with the school Board of Governors (BoG) and Parents Teachers Association, we have resolved that the school be closed indefinitely. We shall announce on radio the date for re-opening,” he said in a brief to the students' assembly.

The angry students jeered and shouted as the vice chairman of the school BoG, James Lumoro addressed them. The head teacher of the school, David Ocan Kitara warned the students against violence explaining that by destroying the already built wall fence of the school, the students were engaging in a criminal act.

He advised the students to either calm down and resume classes or be sent home. A senior four student complained that the cooks were not cooking for the students adding that after missing breakfast they were not even sure of lunch. Apart from some Southern Sudanese students who expressed unhappiness over returning home after the closure of the school others were seen chatting and laughing as they carried their property out of the school premises under police surveillance.
