AFTER a largely successful 5th edition of Entebbe Ladies Open over the weekend the tournament could soon be elevated to Uganda Ladies Golf Union (ULGU) status.
Speaking at the prize-giving ceremony, Entebbe Golf Club chairman Innocent Kihiika observed that the event had grown from hosting home based ladies, opening it up to members of other clubs and now attracting international golfers.
The event, won by Tanzanian star Madina Iddi, had competitors from Rwanda as well.
“We want the ladies Union to make this tournament a Union event. It’s up to them now to take it up. They should utilize this chance as we still have another two years with our current sponsors. As long as it is played at Entebbe we have no problem with you (ULGU) taking it up. Our role will be to organise it,” Kihiika said.
ULGU president Jasper Kamukama was delighted by Kihiika’s gesture and hailed the club for nurturing good golfers.
Kamukama said they were preparing a national team of four to compete in South Africa and expected Entebbe to be represented in the team.
ULGU of recent organise only the Uganda Open and any other international women tournament that Uganda hosts.
During the leadership of Alice Owor and Monica Ntege ULGU used to organise several local events and the elevation of Entebbe Ladies Open would be a step in the right direction.
